Novije spoznaje pokazuju znaËenje ovih sastojaka za zdravlje ljudi koje daleko nadmaπuje znaËenje same anemije te se proteæe na mentalno zdravlje, nastanak kardiovaskularnih, neuroloπkih i malignih bolesti. Zbog ograniËena prostora nemoguÊ je sveobuhvatan pregled ovog problema. Manje Êe se govoriti o dobro poznatim kliniËkim manifestacijama. Teæiπte Êe biti na temeljnim metaboliËkim aspektima od vaænosti za razumijevanje poremeÊaja te modernom pristupu dijagnostici i terapiji ovih stanja. Posebna pozornost posvetit Êe se i novim spoznajama o uËestalosti i znaËenju ovih faktora za ljudsko zdravlje te o uzrocima koji dovode do deficita, a koji su rezultat naËina æivota pojedinca ili populacije. Anemija je najËeπÊi poremeÊaj krvnih loza i jedno od najËeπÊih patoloπkih stanja opÊenito, s obzirom na to da se u nekom obliku javlja gotovo u svakoj ljudskoj bolesti. Zato u najveÊem broju sluËajeva anemiju ne treba shvaÊati kao posebnu dijagnozu, nego kao kliniËki znak, evaluacija koja vodi k postavljanju dijagnoze osnovne bolesti.
